Buying a Domain Name

How do I buy a domain name?
At Lime, one year of an Australian domain registration is included for free when you sign up for any of our website packages.
You can search for the availability of a domain name, and then register it at any domain registrar. Lime is a reseller for domain registrations. Check for domain availability at lime.domains.
Based on your contract duration, you will be charged a renewal fee when it’s time to extend your domain registration. For example, a .com.au domain renewal costs $25 +GST.
Does it matter where I buy my domain name?
Yes. A variety of factors influence how easy and cost-effective it is to manage your domain with a given registrar. At the heart of it are domain management features, like the ability to edit your domain’s DNS records, which some registrars do not provide as standard.
Many registrars have hidden costs and fees, charging for a variety of “features” that others provide for free, such as transfer fees, administration fees, and privacy fees. Some registrars even subsidise your registration fees by selling your personal data to third parties.
Providing low initial registration fees and later hiking up the charge when it comes time to renew the domain is also a common tactic.
The quality of customer support is also a major variable – some dodgy vendors can be difficult to contact, making it difficult to switch providers or troubleshoot issues, should the need arise.
Can I buy a domain name for life?
When you register a domain name, you are the owner of that domain, but based on the duration of your contract, you will have to pay renewal fees to your provider periodically.
Domain names are registered for a minimum term of one year. The registration must be renewed at the end of each term, or else the registration shall expire and someone else could apply for ownership. It is not possible to register a domain name for life. ICANN, the authority that manages domain names, only allows domain names to be registered for a maximum term of 10 years.
