Do-it-yourself website building is becoming increasingly accessible for anyone with a computer and access to the internet. Mastering DIY website design and development requires a commitment to learning, and technical abilities that go beyond merely “drag & drop“. Additionally, you should have an eye for usability design principles as well as aesthetic appeal.
What is the easiest website to build?
In our tests, WordPress emerges as the easiest path to build a full-fledged website with all the features a business might conceivably need. As with any interface, new users will find that it has a bit of a learning curve. However, using ‘number of clicks’ as a measure of ease-of-use, we find that WordPress is comparable to platforms such as Wix and Squarespace, with an average of 3.3 clicks to any feature / setting in WordPress, as against 3.5 in Wix and 3.0 in Squarespace. In addition, WordPress is also far more powerful and versatile than any drag-and-drop website builder, which explains why it powers 63.6% of all websites on the internet. And, why we recommend WordPress for our customers’ sites.
Can we make website without coding?
Drag-and-drop website builders make it possible to build a website without using any code. However, to prevent users from making changes that may break some feature or layout on the site, website builders like Wix and Squarespace are very restrictive, severely limiting what a user can or cannot do on their website. In our tests, new users typically took about 19 hours to design a website from scratch on Squarespace, and about 23 hours on Wix.
What software do I need to create a website?
To build a website with HTML and CSS, you can use an HTML editor such as Adobe Dreamweaver or Google Web Designer. To build a website without code, you can use online platforms such as Wix, Squarespace, or Webflow. Considering the number of templates and plugins available for WordPress, you can also build a WordPress website with very little code.
Do you have to pay to get a website?
Not necessarily. There are free options available, such as Google My Business Websites and Google Sites, although we generally advise against them because of the drawbacks they hold for businesses, ranging from ads on your website (including potentially ads promoting your competitor) to the inability to have your own domain name.
Should I make my own website or hire someone?
The decision to hire versus doing-it-yourself is based on three variables:
- the demands / premium on your time
- the availability of professionals who will do it for you
- the cost of each option
For most users building their own business website, we recommend hiring a professional. Lime has website packages starting from just $250, with annual renewal charges of $200.
This means that the cost of owning your own business website for three years costs about $216 per year with Lime. In contrast, website builders like Squarespace quickly become expensive, with the cost of a comparable website standing at $300 per year at minimum.
In addition, website builder platforms also charge you transaction fees per every sale on your site. This means, if you ever want to accept online payments on your website for selling your products / services / appointments, you will end up having to pay the platform a commission on every sale.
For these reasons, we generally recommend hiring a professional as the most cost-effective option for businesses in the long run.
